Young Professionals at the ISWA World Congress

Each year the ISWA Young Professionals Group hosts a special session at the ISWA World Congress, which takes place in a different city each year. Our special sessions are attended by international experts and practitioners from a range of backgrounds including engineers, social scientists, economists, researchers, entrepreneurs, and business owners.

We create a fun and interactive environment to engage participants in brainstorming innovative ideas, programs and business models that can be applied to solve real world waste management challenges.

Join us at the upcoming World Congress in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where we will 1) explore the role of education in waste management and 2) discuss solutions from across the globe to be applied to waste challenges in South East Asia.

The YPG was front and centre at the 2017 ISWA World Congress,

Baltimore USA, which brought together 2,000 delegates from the US

and around the world. The opening ceremony was hosted by YPG Chair,

Kat Heinrich, together with SWANA YPG Chair, Lynsey Baer.

During the opening ceremony, Kat and Lynsey launched the findings

and Map from our World Waste Challenges Survey - a landmark project

for the YPG, which revealed the state of waste management across the

globe, and helped set the scene for the congress programme.

Following the launch of the Map, the ISWA and SWANA YP groups

co-hosted a workshop with congress participants to brainstorm

solutions to the three of the top waste challenges, drawing on case

studies where these challenges exist:

  • Lack of circular product design
  • Lack of public participation in recycling programs, and
  • Open dumpsites

The solutions were pitched to experts/ real-world problem holders from each country. Winning pitches were presented at the Closing Ceremony.

2016 - Novi Sad, Serbia

At the 2016 ISWA World Congress in Novi Sad, Serbia, over 50 ISWA Young Professionals got together to discuss the theme “Waste Management in Southeastern Europe” - with an engaging Workshop and Panel Discussion.

2015 - antwerp, belgium

In Antwerp the Young Professionals Group held a special session on "Entrepreneurship in Waste Management" with the aim of identifying opportunities and barriers for entrepreneurship in the waste management sector and finding various solutions to bridge the gaps identified, providing inspiration and motivation to participants in a highly interactive environment.

The session was a great success in attracting awareness on the topic and fostering new ideas to improve waste management around the world. Some ideas are being further developed into businesses.
