ISWA World Congress 2018: A huge success for the Young Professionals

14 Nov 2018 -

The ISWA YPG was again front and center at the 2018 ISWA World Congress, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which brought together 1,600 delegates from Malaysia and around the world. Watch the full congress video here and the photo gallery here.

During the opening ceremony ISWA YPG chair Dr Andrea Winterstetter was invited to speak about the group’s 5th anniversary and the ISWA YPG Flagship Project 2018, including the global campaign #WhatHappensToMyWaste, which aims at raising awareness on the final destination of waste in different parts of the world. Moreover, we proudly presented our new ISWA YPG image video.

ISWA YPG Special Sessions

And like every year the ISWA Young Professionals Group hosted two special sessions: In our first session #WhatHappensToMyWaste - Waste education around the world on Monday afternoon we presented the key results of the campaign #WhatHappensToMyWaste and acknowledged the most successful national campaign leaders, namely PIERRE VERDIEU (Haiti), MATTHEW ALLAN (Australia), JIAO TANG (China). Watch the campaign video here!

Moreover we honored the winners of the 1st ISWA YPG education award:

 Category “Schools”

1. Recycle Up (Ghana)

2. Gjeese (Waste Education for Schools in Haiti)

3. Green Indonesia (Indonesia)

 Category “Other Waste Educators”

1. Trashonomics (India)

2. PCAI Junior (Greece)

3. The 6Rs (USA)

In the following workshop we brainstormed ideas and concepts to further develop this campaign. The winning pitch “Foods from the Future” will be supported by the Portuguese company LIPOR.

In our second session on Tuesday afternoon we presented and discussed solutions from across the globe to be applied to waste challenges in South East Asia. As part of the Flagship Project 2018 the 1st ISWA YPG Online Conference Waste management in South East Asia: Local Challenges, Global Solutions was organized in June this year.

The idea was to give early stage researchers and young professionals the opportunity to present their research. Based on a call for abstracts 6 presentations on different topics were chosen and in the end a jury selected 3 winners. So in this session two of the three winners of the Online Conference presented their research: ADELINE MERTENAT (Switzerland) talked about “Black Soldier Fly Biowaste Treatment – A Way to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions” and WISVESH BANGALORE SUBRAMANIAN (India) presented  “India’s first digitized door-to-door waste segregation and collection monitoring solution”. Dr Anne Woolridge (UK) was invited as a special guest to give an overview presentation on health care waste. Mohamed Alsamet moderated the following panel discussion with high-level experts, including Dr. Jane Gilbert (UK), Mohamed Faisal (Malaysia), Wan Azizul Faiz (Malaysia), Zamri Abdul Rahman (Malaysia) on how solutions that have worked in other countries might be copied to tackle waste management challenges in South East Asia. Read the summary here.
